About the OpenStreetMap Pastel style

by Anders Lund

This OpenStreetMap vector style was derived from the OSM Bright style from OpenMapTiles as a learning project, trying to understand how to work with OSM vector tiles and MapLibre. Note that this is work in progress!

Goals with this style: To create a beautiful map with a good visual representation of features on all zoom levels.

  • Many administratve boundries are hidden, and styles changed, to make those less dominant.
  • That silly wave pattern in water bodies removed.
  • Adjust lightness of greens, so that woodland is darker than grassland.
  • Display farmland.
  • Display wetland.
  • Darken the inherited land color a bit in mid zoom ranges, so that villages, towns and cities are more visible.
  • Display Stadiums and sports pitches.
  • Display piers.
  • Make the map slightly more contrasy, various color adjustments.
  • Change tracks (dirt roads) to be visually different from small roads.
  • Hide some garden and park icons, to avoid overflowing the map with those. This may be changed to using less contrasty icons for the purpose.
  • A more complete iconset thanks to osmapp.org

To compare with the original style, use the style switcher in the top left corner of the map.

A big thank you to the amazing OpenStreetMap and Maplibre communities.

This map is using OpenFreeMap tiles - thank you for providing those.

Help me testing: Please navigate to your own area and look at how it renders here. Does it look OK? Visit an area with piers, like a marina or harbour, and an area with stadiums and sports pitches.
